The history of Sniffies
Sniffies went from a niche website to one of the best-known names in gay cruising in under a decade.
2018: Launch
Blake Gallagher launched Sniffies in Seattle as a browser-based map.
The name
In 2021 a company marketer linked the name to a former website; in 2022 Gallagher called that a rumor and said it was simply an evocative, available domain.
2020: Pandemic
Sniffies urged users to avoid in-person meetups and tested LivePlay video chat.
2024: New features
Vanilla Mode and cruiser filters arrived.
2025: iOS app
An iPhone app launched in March and was removed from the App Store in May.
2026: Investment and change
Match Group invested $100 million, and location message boards were replaced with AI summaries.
